Hello, ladies! We’re happy to be back and we’ve got a great episode for you. We’re giving a recap on what we’ve been up to during our podcast break & a great interview with Emily from The Connected Mom Life.

Emily’s company is all about building the circle of friends all moms crave. She shares why she started her company, what it’s like to move and start over, and why she started her company out of necessity.

One of our favorite tips from the episode is how to ask a mom you’ve been talking to for her number. For example, if you’re at the park and you’ve made a connection, ask the mom, “hey, the park is more fun with friends. Can I get your number and I’ll text you next time we come to the park?” It’s simple, non-pressuring and tells the mom exactly what you’re planning to do.

Other big takeaways are that ALL MOMS ARE GOING THROUGH THIS – many moms feel alone and that making friends is difficult, that it’s okay to not make a connection after 3 meetups and there’s nothing awful that can happen by reaching out!

We loved this conversation with Emily!!

      • The trip will end; you will reach your destination eventually, then celebrate!
      • Download episodes on your device ahead of time

    Jess

    1. Sun visor
    2. Best Choice Kids 3-in-1 picnic table

    Megan’s Tips:

    • I started reading “Oh Crap!”
      • Didn’t finish
    • Decided she was ready because she follows directions well and picks up on things quickly
    • Got two potties (upstairs and downstairs)
      • Had one out in the open for a while
    • Day 1 we had her half naked
      • Asked if she had to go potty before meals, before activities
      • Have towels and wet vac out and ready
    • Day 2-4
      • She wore underwear
        • We had regular and padded
        • She seemed to have more accidents in the padded underwear because maybe she thought it was a diaper
      • Practiced taking it off
      • She got a sticker for going #1 or #2, 10 stickers got a bigger prize, like a coloring book
        • She also got mini M&M’s in the beginning, but weaned off getting those for a #1
      • Had a couple accidents when she was playing
      • Started telling her it was time to go potty
    • Day 5
      • Seemed to be when it clicked
    • Months later she goes when she needs to
      • Still asks us to wipe and/or pull up her underwear/pants
    • We keep a potty and TP in the car
      • She is currently scared of going on a public toilet because one automatically flushed while she was sitting on it
    • She had a tough time going #2
      • She did it a couple times when we were training and then she stopped
        • Would hold it all morning and only go in her diaper at nap time
        • Started getting rashes, wouldn’t fall asleep
      • I would try to catch her pushing and rush her to the toilet, but it was stressing her out and me out so I stopped
        • One day she just started doing it
        • She will still go in her diaper on occasion

    Jess‘ Tips:

    • Tried in February
      • Didn’t go well
      • He didn’t understand, would scream when he was put on the potty
    • Tried again in May and it was almost flawless
      • In between that time, he would get an M&M for sitting on the potty
      • When he started training again, he would get a sticker and an M&M with a big prize (Lightning McQueen car) for filling up the sticker sheet
    • Tips for the moms:
      • Set the bar low (“let’s just try it”)
        • Be patient, cool
      • Expect to sit in the bathroom for 45 minutes
        • Listen to music, read a book to them
        • Bring in a chair for you to sit on
      • Expect for it to be rough
      • Don’t feel badly if you have to take a step back and try again later
    • Neither of us used Pull-Ups
    • Neither of us are attempting nighttime potty training

On the latest episode of ‘Sup, Moms? Podcast, we’re talking all things Mom Fashion. We have very different styles – Megan is much more chic than Jess – but we both love clothes and accessories.

    Here’s Jess’ style:

    • Uniform has been the same throughout quarantine
    • In a bit of a transitional period because the clothes she does wear, she has had for a long time, but she also doesn’t have access to her full wardrobe (in storage)
    • Likes accessories to pop
    • If her style was a housewife, it would be Shannon Beador or Heather Dubrow
    • Athleisure: Zella, Vuori
    • Jeans/denim shorts: Kut from the Kloth at Nordstrom Rack
    • Vneck tshirts
    • Maxi dresses
    • Necklaces: Kendra Scott
    • Current inspiration is the Boden catalogue and Bree Van de Kamp (minus the pearls) (image by Ron Tom / Walt Disney Television via Getty Images)

    Here’s Megan’s Style:

    • Dressing the same pre- and post-quarantine
    • A “one piece dressing” is her uniform
      • Ex: Dress, jumpsuit
      • Don’t have to think about it
    • Sometimes people say I’m “dressy”
      • If only they knew it was because I’m too lazy to pick out two things to wear
    • Her housewife style would be Kelly Dodd (image c/o Bravo TV)
    • Jewelry: Don’t underestimate the power of a pair of earrings to lift a mood
    • Leggings: Gayhay, Lululemon Align, Old Navy
    • Tops: Old Navy, Daily Ritual
    • Jumpsuits: Free People, Urban Outfitters, Amazon
    • Dresses: Amazon, Zara, Target/Universal Thread

**This episode discusses pregnancy and delivery. If this is triggering for you, please don’t listen. Our hearts go out to anyone who has experienced pregnancy and infant loss**

On this episode, it’s Jess’ turn to share her birth story with Luke. And this is an extra fun story because Jess gave birth in Stuttgart, Germany!

    Here are some facts:

    • Due Date: October 31
    • Birth Date: October 9
    • Weight: 61/2 pounds
    • Jess Weight Gain: about 25 pounds

    From Jess:

At 3 AM on October 9, I got up to pee, walked back into our bedroom and said, “Uh oh.” I had a feeling like I was still peeing, called the crisis hotline for the hospital and she asked if I could go back to sleep and if I could and to come to the hospital in the morning. Of course, I couldn’t fall back to sleep and spent the rest of the night Googling “how to know if your water broke.”

Show up at the hospital, go to the delivery area, knock on the door, have the midwife answer the door, check to see if I’m the labor, basically get kicked out, go check into the hospital and go get food! Yes, I had a pretzel! The midwife told us to come back in an hour and a half.

It went on like that for hours: do a contraction check for about 20 minutes, go for a walk (OUTSIDE!) and then get checked again.

    Here’s the details:

    • Arrived at hospital around 7:30 AM
    • Got checked, went for walks, came back to get checked after an hour and a half
    • Labor wasn’t progressing so at 4 PM tried to start labor, was about 3 CM
    • Upped Pitocin at 7 PM
    • Got epidural at 9 PM around 5 CM (took 45 minutes for it to happen, had to sit “like a banana,” and then was asked if my legs felt “furry”)
    • Started pushing at 10 PM in several different positions
    • Luke was born at 11:20 PM

    A couple of notes:

German hospital food is disgusting & was served a chuck of feta cheese! Midwives and nurses do a lot of the work, even changing Luke’s diaper during recovery! I had private health insurance, so I was able to have a private recovery room with a shared toilet. Vinn also could not sleep at the hospital and had to go home.

The ‘Sup, Moms? Podcast is a member of the Amazon Affiliates Program. As an Amazon Affiliate, we earn a small income from qualifying purchases. Thank you!

Boy do we have a great episode for you. Amy Palanjian of Yummy Toddler Food & author of books, including Busy Little Hands Food Play, shares her wisdom of all things toddler food. Be sure to follow Amy on her website and on Instagram.

Amy started in magazines and discovered when her oldest reached toddler age that there weren’t many resources out there with toddler meal inspirations. So, Amy started Yummy Toddler Food on the side. She taught herself how to be a food blogger, had a large backlog of content when she launched and has created a successful business and has 255,000 followers on Instagram. She knows her stuff!

    Takeaways:
Amy taught us SO MUCH and we hope you do, as well. Did you know that the toddler phase is from age 1 to age 8? Who knew?! And that there’s a phase of development called neophobia, which is the fear of trying new foods but looks like picky eating in a toddler. It’s so important to update your mindset with what success means when it comes to feeding your toddler.

“Have something on the table that everyone can eat & nobody cries about food!”

    -Amy’s goals with meal time
    • Want your kids to eat without fear, with kids who have a healthy relationship with foods
    • You won’t be in this phase forever
    • See if there’s anything that can help make meal times smoother, simple changes to change unwanted behavior – like changing a fork, change where you sit, turn on music
    • It is possible to “start over”
    • If your pediatrician recommends Pediasure, ask some follow up questions, like: how long should we do this? What’s the goal? Can we check in in three months?
    • Remember, you cannot move how hungry a child is in order to put on weight
